What’s measured in this test

Each biomarker helps reveal insights into your health.

QFIT

What is it?

qFIT stands for quantitative Faecal Immunochemical Test. It is a stool test that detects tiny traces of blood invisible to the naked eye. Unlike older stool tests, qFIT specifically targets human haemoglobin from the lower digestive tract, making it more accurate.

Why is it measured?

It is used as a screening tool to help identify people who may need further investigation for bowel conditions, including colorectal cancer and polyps. Early detection significantly improves outcomes.

What can high results mean?

A result above the threshold means blood has been detected. Common causes include haemorrhoids, polyps, and inflammatory bowel conditions. A positive result usually leads to a referral for further investigation.

What can low results mean?

A negative result means no significant blood was detected. This is reassuring but does not completely exclude all bowel conditions.

What can affect the result?

  • Active bleeding from haemorrhoids or anal fissures

  • Menstruation at the time of collection

  • Anti-inflammatory medications such as aspirin or ibuprofen

Frequently asked questions

What is a qFIT test?

qFIT (quantitative Faecal Immunochemical Test) is a highly sensitive stool test that detects tiny amounts of hidden blood in your stool - blood you can't see with the naked eye. It's a key screening tool for bowel cancer and other gut conditions.

Who should consider a qFIT bowel screening test?

This test is important for:

  • Anyone over 45 wanting proactive bowel health monitoring

  • Those with a family history of bowel cancer

  • People experiencing unexplained digestive symptoms

  • Anyone concerned about bowel health between NHS screenings

What can the qFIT test detect?

The test identifies hidden blood in your stool, which can be an early indicator of:

  • Colorectal cancer

  • Polyps (pre-cancerous growths)

  • Inflammatory bowel disease

  • Other bowel conditions

How do I collect the qFIT sample?

The test kit includes clear instructions and all necessary materials. You'll collect a small stool sample at home using the provided collection device, then return it to the lab using the prepaid envelope. It's quick, hygienic, and straightforward.

How will I receive my qFIT results?

Secure online results with a GP-written explanation from Brooksby Medical in 2–3 working days after the lab receives your sample.

What happens if my qFIT result is positive?

A positive result means blood was detected. We will explain the significance and recommend urgent referral to your GP for further investigation, which typically includes a colonoscopy to identify the source.
