Bowel Health FIT Test (qFIT)

Concerned about your gut health or a family history of bowel cancer? This quantitative FIT (qFIT) checks for tiny traces of blood in a stool sample that you can't see. A positive result doesn't diagnose cancer and a normal result doesn't rule it out, but it shows whether further investigation is worthwhile, with clear next steps within 2-3 working days. If you have symptoms such as bleeding, weight loss or a persistent change in bowel habit, see a doctor rather than relying on this test.

Common questions
Everything you need to know before ordering your Bowel Health FIT Test (qFIT).
What is a qFIT test?
A quantitative Faecal Immunochemical Test (qFIT) checks for tiny traces of blood in your stool that are invisible to the naked eye. Blood in the stool can have many causes, including haemorrhoids, inflammation, polyps and, in some cases, bowel cancer. It is the same type of test used by the NHS bowel cancer screening programme. A positive result does not diagnose cancer, and a normal result does not rule it out. If you have symptoms such as rectal bleeding, a persistent change in bowel habit, unexplained weight loss or abdominal pain, see a doctor rather than relying on this test.
Who should consider this test?
This test is useful for:
Anyone with a family history of bowel cancer or polyps
Those experiencing changes in bowel habits lasting more than three weeks
People aged 40 and over wanting proactive screening
Anyone who wants checking before they become eligible for NHS bowel screening
How do I collect the stool sample?
Your kit includes a sample collection device and clear instructions. You collect a small stool sample using the probe provided, seal it in the tube and return it to the lab using the prepaid packaging. The process takes less than a minute.
What does a positive result mean?
A positive result means hidden blood was detected in your sample. This does not mean you have bowel cancer. Many causes exist, including haemorrhoids, polyps and inflammation. A positive result means further investigation is recommended, usually a colonoscopy. Your GP report will explain the result clearly and advise on next steps.
How will I receive my results?
Secure online results with a GP-written explanation from Brooksby Medical in 2 to 3 working days.
