Common questions
Everything you need to know before ordering your Diabetes Screen HbA1c.
What is HbA1c and what does it show?
HbA1c (glycated haemoglobin) measures your average blood sugar levels over the past 2–3 months. Unlike a random glucose test, it gives a long-term picture of blood sugar control and is the standard marker used to screen for type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes.
What is a normal HbA1c level?
HbA1c is measured in mmol/mol:
Below 42 mmol/mol — normal
42–47 mmol/mol — pre-diabetes (increased risk)
48 mmol/mol or above — diabetes range
Your GP-written report will explain your result and advise on next steps.
Do I need to fast for an HbA1c test?
No fasting is needed. Unlike a fasting glucose test, HbA1c measures your long-term average and is not affected by what you ate recently. You can eat and drink normally before the test.
Who should consider an HbA1c test?
HbA1c testing is recommended for:
Anyone with a family history of type 2 diabetes
People who are overweight or have a BMI over 25
Those experiencing increased thirst, frequent urination, or unexplained fatigue
Anyone wanting a simple diabetes risk check
How will I receive my HbA1c results?
Secure online results with a GP-written explanation from Brooksby Medical in 2–3 working days.
