Common questions
Everything you need to know before ordering your Iron Profile Blood Test.
What does an Iron Profile measure?
This test checks iron, ferritin (iron stores), TIBC (total iron binding capacity) and transferrin saturation. Together these markers show whether you have enough iron, too little (deficiency) or too much (overload), and how efficiently your body is transporting it.
Who should consider an iron test?
This test is useful for:
Anyone experiencing unexplained fatigue, breathlessness or dizziness
Women with heavy periods
Vegetarians and vegans concerned about iron intake
Those with a family history of haemochromatosis (iron overload)
Do I need to fast for an iron test?
Fasting is recommended for the most accurate iron and transferrin saturation readings. Avoid food from midnight and test in the morning. Water is fine.
What can affect iron results?
Recent illness, infection and inflammation can raise ferritin levels even when iron stores are actually low. Vitamin C supplements taken close to the test can affect iron absorption readings. Your GP report will interpret results in context.
How will I receive my results?
Secure online results with a GP-written explanation from Brooksby Medical in 2 to 3 working days.
